To be absolutely clear on where Blue Moon Digital stands as a company and as a group of individuals, we unequivocally support the Black Lives Matter movement. But it is not enough to say that we stand in solidarity with those that have been affected by systemic racism. Like so many around the United States, around the globe, we too feel the need to take action.
We believe that change starts from within. So, in these heavy moments after yet another murder of a black person at the hands of police, an institution that we are made to believe will protect us, we took a moment to look within. We found that we have work to do.
We shined a light on our company culture, and we can do better. We must do better. It would be easy to call us out on our lack of diversity, and if you did, you would be right – we are a predominately white business.
The momentum behind this movement, this moment in history, is something that we will carry forward into all that we do. It does not end here – this is only the beginning of turning the tide and righting the wrong of hundreds of years of racial injustice.
This country was built on racism, on the backs of slaves. For over 400 years, systematic racism has oppressed Black people and has facilitated a “business as usual” normalization of racism. Companies have greatly benefited from this covert normalization of racism, companies like ours.
We encourage corporations and brands to take stock of their corporate structure as well.
For us, at a corporate level that looks like:
- Immediately make contributions aimed at leveling the playing field for the Black community
- Continuously support a narrative of equality at work and in our community through outreach
- Create a company that reflects the diversity of our country through intentional diversified hiring
We commit to creating a company that reflects the diversity of our country. Over the next three to five years, we will seek – through hiring practices – to have a staff that reflects the unique beauty and diversity of our nation. This commitment includes challenging systematic racism and inequity wherever we find it.
We would also like to thank our staff and the Black community for sharing their voices. We have so much to learn and will continue to take accountability for our actions – or inactions.
Taking action and being actively anti-racist can look like so many things. It can take the forms of educating yourself, sharing what you learn, having hard conversations and taking a hard look at where you, as an individual, can do better.
